naphazoline/pheniramine (Naphcon-A)
Naphazoline 0.025% plus pheniramine 0.3%
Indications:
- temporary relief of ocular congestion
- red eye
Contraindications: narrow-angle glaucoma
pregnancy-category C
safety in lactation ?
Dosage: 1 drop BID-QID PRN
Solution: 15 mL.
Pharmacokinetics:
1) vasoconstriction within 10 minutes
2) duration of action: 2-6 hours
Adverse effects:
1) transient burning
2) stinging
3) mydriasis
4) excessive use may result in irritation & rebound hyperemia
Mechanism of action:
1) decongestant (vasoconstriction of conjunctival blood vessels)
2) direct stimulation of alpha adrenergic receptors with little or no effect on beta adrenergic receptors
