Na+-coupled monocarboxylate transporter 2 (electroneutral Na+ monocarboxylate cotransporter, low-affinity Na+-lactate cotransporter, solute carrier family 5 member 12, SLC5A12, SMCT2)

Function: - acts as an electroneutral & low-affinity Na+ dependent Na+ coupled solute transporter - catalyzes transport across the plasma membrane of many monocarboxylates including lactate, pyruvate, nicotinate, propionate, butyrate & beta-D-hydroxybutyrate - may be responsible for the first step of reabsorption of monocarboxylates from the lumen of the proximal tubule of the kidney & the small intestine - may play a role in monocarboxylates transport in the retina (putative) - mediates electroneutral uptake of lactate, with a stoichiometry of 2 Na+ for each lactate (putative) Structure: - belongs to the Na+:solute symporter (SSF) (TC 2.A.21) family Compartment: - apical cell membrane - detected at the brush border membrane of the kidney - colocalizes with viementin in Mueller cells (putative) Alternative splicing: named isoforms=2
