Etiology: - successive & rapid contractions of motor units associated with chronic nerve injury - discharges arise from the peripheral aspects of regenerating nerves Genetics: - associated with defects in KCNA1 (myokymia isolated type 1) Clinical manifestations: - a nearly continuous undulation of the body surface overlying the muscle Special laboratory: - electromyography typically shows continuous motor unit activity ith spontaneous oligo- & multiplet-discharges of high intraburst frequency (myokymic discharges) Notes: - isolated spontaneous muscle twitches occur in many persons & have no grave significance
