myelin transcription factor-1; proteolipid protein-binding protein (MYT1, PLPB1, MTF1, MYTI, KIAA0835, KIAA1050)
Function:
- binds to the promoter regions of proteolipid proteins of the central nervous system
- may play a role in development of neurons & oligodendrogalia in the CNS
- may regulate a critical transition point in oligodendrocyte lineage development by modulating oligodendrocyte progenitor proliferation relative to terminal differentiation & up-regulation of myelin gene transcription
- interacts with STEAP3
Structure:
- contains 7 C2HC-type Zn+2 fingers arranged in 2 widely separated clusters; these 2 domains of DNA binding can function independently & recognize the same DNA sequence
Compartment: nucleus
Expression:
- mostly in developing nervous system
- expressed in neural progenitors & oligodendrocyte lineage cells
- more highly expressed in oligodendrocyte progenitors than in differentiated oligodendrocytes
