multiple sleep latency test (MSLT)
Indications:
- sleep disturbance
- excessive daytime sleepiness
Procedure:
1) sleep is measured over night.
2) the following day, repeated measurements of sleep latency (time to onset of sleep) is measured at 2 hour intervals under standardized conditions
3) in narcolepsy, a decreased mean sleep latency with at least 2 sleep onset REM-periods is observed
a) mean latency to sleep in narcolepsy patients is 5 minutes
b) mean latency to sleep in normal individuals > 10 minutes
4) EEG, EKG & EOG (electro-oculogram) are monitored
