Etiology: - behavioral adaptation to increase air intake during exercise - mouth breathing is abnormal during rest - nasal congestion or other nasal obstruction Complications: - gingivitis, halitosis, especially upon waking if mouth breathing occurs during sleep Notes: - human infants are sometimes considered obligate nasal breathers
