Function: - motilin is a stimulus for contraction of smooth muscle in the upper GI tract - it increases motility of the gastric fundus & antrum, duodenum, & lower esophageal sphincter - ingestion of fat stimulates, glucose inhibits, & protein has little effect on motilin release - motilin's actions are most pronounced in the fasting state Structure: belongs to the motilin family Compartment: secreted Expression: - motilin is secreted by cells in the small intestine, gall bladder & biliary tract & the pituitary & pineal gland [1,2] Pathology: - increases in motilin concentration have been observed in a) Crohn's disease b) ulcerative colitis c) irritable bowel syndrome d) tropical sprue e) acute intestinal infection
