Function:
- motilin is a stimulus for contraction of smooth muscle in the upper GI tract
- it increases motility of the gastric fundus & antrum, duodenum, & lower esophageal sphincter
- ingestion of fat stimulates, glucose inhibits, & protein has little effect on motilin release
- motilin's actions are most pronounced in the fasting state
Structure: belongs to the motilin family
Compartment: secreted
Expression:
- motilin is secreted by cells in the small intestine, gall bladder & biliary tract & the pituitary & pineal gland [1,2]
Pathology:
- increases in motilin concentration have been observed in
a) Crohn's disease
b) ulcerative colitis
c) irritable bowel syndrome
d) tropical sprue
e) acute intestinal infection
