Morgellons disease
Epidemiology:
1) associated with Lyme disease
2) associated AHDD or autism (children)
Pathology:
1) peripheral nervous system affected
2) central nervous system affected
Clinical manifestations:
1) non-healing skin lesions, may be highly unusual
- fiber-like strands extruding from the skin
2) various dermatologic & neuropsychiatric symptoms
3) crawling, stinging, biting, sensations
4) extreme difficulty with mental concentration & short-term memory
5) mood disorders are common (50%)
Differential diagnosis:
- delusional parasitic infection
Management:
- responds to antibacterial agents (see Lyme disease)
