Function: - role in iron cellular uptake Cofactor: - binds a single atom of iron per subuni - may also bind Zn+2 Compartment: - attached to the membrane by a GPI-anchor - appears to be internalized, then recycled back to the plasma membrane Expression: - fetal tissues - liver, epithelium, umbilical cord, placenta, sweat gland ducts, - capillary endothelial cells especially in brain Pathology: - expressed in melanomas - serum levels are increased in patients with Alzheimer's disease [2]
