megacalycosis

Etiology: - malformation of the renal papillae Pathology: - enlargement of the renal calyces without urinary tract obstruction or vesicoureteral reflux - malformation of the renal medulla - short collecting ducts - number of calyces is increased. - mild impairment of maximum urine concentration capacity Clinical manifestations: - generally asymptomatic Radiology: - intravenous urography: - enlargement of the pyelocalyceal system - increased number of calyces - dilatation of the renal pelvis is not present - ureter is slim - voiding cysturethrography - vesicoureteral reflux is not present - renal scintigraphy - normal renal function - prompt washout of the radionuclide Management: - no specific treatment necessary
