medications via enteral tube
Guidelines:
- medications in liquid form are generally preferable
- sublingual, rectal, transdermal & IV are alternative routes
- some (not all) IV medications can be given orally or through a feeding tube
- some capsules may be opened & intact pellets can be administered through large-bore feeding tubes (see below) [1]
Capsules that can be opened for administration of intact granules:
1) sustained-release medications
a) acetazolamide Diamox Sequels
b) carbamazepine: Equetro, Carbatrol
c) dexmethylphenidate: Focalin XR
d) dextroamphetamine: Adderall XR
e) diltiazem: Cardizem CD, Taztia XT, Tiazac
f) duloxetine: Cymbalta
g) erythromycin: ERYC
h) esomeprazole: Nexium
j) indomethacin: Indocin SR
j) lansoprazole: Prevacid
k) methylphenidate: Metadate CD, Ritalin LA
l) morphine sulfate: Avinza, Kadian
m) omeprazole: Prilosec
n) potassium chloride: Micro-K
o) theophylline: Theo-24
p) verapamil: Verelan, Verelan PM
2) enteric-coated medications
a) budesonide: Entocort EC
b) pancrelipase: Cotazym-S, Creon, Lipram, Pancrease MT, Pancrecarb MS, Pancrelipase
3) other
- topiramate: Topamax

4) medications that can be irritating
