Reference interval: - 7.4-10.4 fL Clinical significance: - younger platelets tend to be larger - thus MPV will be larger when thrombopoiesis is stimulated Increases: - immune thrombocytopenic purpura - thrombocytopenia due to sepsis - myeloproliferative disorders - massive hemorrhage - prosthetic heart valve - splenectomy - vasculitis - Bernard-Soulier syndrome Decreases: - Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome
