Function: - endocytosis of a diverse group of macromolecules, including modified low density lipoproteins (LDL) - binding of acetylated & oxidized cholesterol - may also bind aggregates of LDL:heparin:fibronectin Structure: - homotrimer - contains 1 collagen-like domain - contains 1 SRCR domain Compartment: membrane Alternative splicing: named isoforms=2 May be produced at very low levels due to a premature stop codon in the mRNA, leading to nonsense-mediated mRNA decay Pathology: - implicated in the pathologic deposition of cholesterol in arterial walls during atherogenesis
