C-C motif chemokine 20; beta-chemokine exodus-1; CC chemokine LARC; liver & activation-regulated chemokine; macrophage inflammatory protein 3 alpha; MIP-3-alpha; small-inducible cytokine A20 (CCL20, LARC, MIP3A, SCYA20)

Function: - chemotactic factor that attracts lymphocytes &, to lesser extent, neutrophils - not chemotactic for monocytes - inhibits proliferation of myeloid progenitors in colony formation assays - may be involved in formation & function of mucosal lymphoid tissues by attracting lymphocytes & dendritic cells towards epithelial cells - C-terminal processed forms have equal chemotactic activity for leukocytes - antibacterial activity E coli ATCC 25922 & S aureus ATCC 29213 - C-terminal processed forms which lack 1, 3 or 6 amino acids are produced by proteolytic cleavage after secretion from peripheral blood monocytes - binds to & activates CCR6 Structure: - belongs to the intercrine beta (chemokine CC) family Compartment: secreted Alternative splicing: named isoforms=2 Expression: - expressed predominantly in the liver, lymph nodes, appendix, peripheral blood lymphocytes, & fetal lung - low expression in thymus, prostate, testis, small intestine & colon - induced by bacterial lipopolysaccharides (LPS), TNF zzzzzzzzzzzzz7 IFN-gamma - induced by phorbol myristate acetate (PMA) in U937 cell line & Bowes melanoma - repressed by IL-10
