Libman-Sacks endocarditis

Etiology: - systemic lupus erythematosus - antiphospholipid antibody syndrome Epidemiology: - 11% of patients with systemic lupus erythematosus Pathology: - non-infectious thrombotic endocarditis - large verrucous lesions near the edge of the mitral valve (most common) - lesions consist of immune complexes. mononuclear cells, & fibrin & platelet thrombi Clinical manifestations: - generally asymptomatic Complications: - transient ischemic attack or embolic stroke - infectious endocarditis
