CD58; lymphocyte function-associated antigen 3; Ag3; Surface glycoprotein LFA-3 (LFA3)

Function: - ligand for CD2 - mediates adhesion between: a) NK cells & target cells b) antigen presenting cells & T cells c) thymocytes & thymic epithelial cells - mediates T-lymphocyte rosetting with erythrocytes - the LFA-3/CD2 interaction may prime response by both the CD2+ & LFA-3+ cells Structure: - contains 1 Ig-like C2-type domain (immunoglobulin-like) Compartment: - isoform 1: cell membrane - isoform 2: cell membrane; lipid-anchor, GPI-anchor Alternative splicing: named isoforms=2 Expression: - GPI-anchored form. may be produced at very low levels due to a premature stop codon in the mRNA, leading to nonsense-mediated mRNA decay - leukocytes - erythrocytes - endothelial cells - epithelial cells - fibroblasts
