K+ voltage-gated channel subfamily A member 5 (voltage-gated K+ channel subunit Kv1.5, HK2, HPCN1, KCNA5)

Function: - mediates voltage-dependent K+ permeability of excitable membranes - assumes opened or closed conformations in response to voltage difference across membrane - K+-selective channel through which K+ may pass in accordance with the electrochemical gradient - may play a role in regulating the secretion of insulin in normal pancreatic islets - heterotetramer of K+ channel proteins - interacts via its PDZ-binding motif with DLG1 - forms a ternary complex with DLG1 & CAV3 (putative) Structure: - amino terminus may be important in determining rate of inactivation of channe - C-terminal PDZ-binding motif may play a role in modulation of channel activity &/or targeting of the channel to specific subcellular compartments - segment S4 is probably the voltage-sensor; characterized by a series of positively charged amino acids at every third position - belongs to the K+ channel family, A (Shaker) subfamily Compartment: membrane Expression: pancreatic islets & insulinoma
