Jones criteria for rheumatic fever
Diagnosis:
1) major manifestations
- carditis
- polyarthritis
- chorea
- erythema marginatum
- subcutaneous nodules
2) minor manifestations
- signs/symptoms
- arthralgia
- fever
- laboratory
- increased erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR)
- increased C-reactive protein (CRP)
- EKG: prolonged PR interval
3) evidence of antecedent group A streptococcal infection
- positive throat culture or rapid streptococcal antigen test
- elevated or rising streptococcal antigen titer
Laboratory evidence of antecedent group A streptococcal infection plus 2 major manifestations or 1 major manifestation plus 2 minor manifestations indicates a high probability of rheumatic fever.
Ref [2] would suggest laboratory evidence of streptococcal infection not necessary for antibiotic prophylaxis.
