Function: - histone demethylase - specifically demethylates Lys-9 of histone H3, thus plays a role in histone code - does not demethylate histone H3 Lys-4, H3 Lys-27, H3 Lys-36 nor histone H4 Lys-20 - demethylates both di- & trimethylated H3 Lys-9 residue, no activity on monomethylated residues - demethylation of Lys generates formaldehyde & succinate Cofactor: binds 1 Fe+2 ion per subunit Structure: - belongs to the JHDM3 histone demethylase family - contains 1 JmjC domain - contains 1 JmjN domain Compartment: nucleus
