Etiology: 1) jaw injury, broken jaw 2) temporomandibular joint syndrome (TMJ syndrome) 3) jaw arthritis 4) jaw alignment disorder 5) bruxism 6) sinusitis 7) toothache 8) salivary gland disease a) suppurative parotitis b) sialoadenitis 9) Caffey's disease 10) dental surgery a) wisdom tooth extraction b) acute post-extraction osteitis 11) dental caries 12) dental abscess 13) jaw tumor 14) jaw cyst 15) rheumatoid arthritis 16) osteoarthritis 17) septic arthritis (see joint pain) 18) teeth clenching 19) Herpes zoster 20) migraine 21) referred pain from myocardial ischemia, myocardial infarction 22) arthritis 23) head & neck cancer 24) hypocalcemic tetany 25) temporal arteritis 26) temporomandibular joint syndrome 27) tetanus 29) trigeminal neuralgia 30) osteonecrosis of the jaw Laboratory: - Complete blood count (CBC), if infection is suspected - serum Calcium, serum phosphate, serum alkaline phosphatase, for possible bone disease - serum Uric acid if gout is suspected - Serum creatine and serum creatine kinase, indicators of muscle disease - Erythrocyte sedimentation rate if temporal arteritis is suspected - Rheumatoid factor if rheumatoid arthritis is suspected. Radiology: - Plain radiography; - intraoral x-rays - panoramic (panorex) x-rays providing a full view of the upper & lower jaws, teeth, TMJs, & sinuses)
