ionophore
Small molecular weight compounds (up to several thousand daltons), largely of bacterial origin. Ionophores are divided into 2 major groups:
1) Mobile carriers which diffuse back & forth across membranes carrying ions with them.
2) Molecules which form channels through which ions may diffuse. In both types, ions are translocated by passive transport (down diffusion gradients).
