Function: - part of the insoluble cornified cell envelope (CE) of stratified squamous epithelia - cytoskeletal protein cross-linked by transglutaminase - may be involved in formation of a cytoskeletal cross-linked structure adjacent to the plasma membrane of squamous epithelia [1] & in the formation of apoptotic cell bodies [2] - some Gln & Lysare cross-linked to other involucrin molecules, to other proteins such as keratin, desmoplakin, periplakin & envoplakin, & to lipids like omega-hydroxyceramide - directly or indirectly cross-linked to cornifelin (CNFN) Structure: belongs to the involucrin family Compartment: - cytoplasm - constituent of the scaffolding of the cornified envelope Expression: - keratinocytes of epidermis & other stratified squamous epithelia
