intravenous pyelography (IVP); intravenous urography (IUP)
Roentgenography of a part of the urinary system made opaque by the injection of an opaque medium into the bloodstream; also called excretory urography.
Indications:
1) provides detailed definition of urinary collecting system
2) used to assess renal size & contour
3) detection & localization of renal calculi
- unexplained flank or abdominal pain in patients with renal stones
4) qualitative assessment of renal function
5) non-glomerular hematuria
6) urinary tract infections
7) voiding disorders
8) poor screen for renovascular hypertension
Contraindications:
- serum creatinine > 2.0 mg/dL
Complications:
1) large osmotic load (congestive heart failure)
2) allergic reactions (5%)
- premedicate with antihistamines & glucocorticoids
3) hyperthyroidism from iodide load
4) nephrotoxicity
- especially in diabetic & azotemic patients
