hydatid cyst; echinococcal cyst

A cyst formed in tissues of intermediate hosts of Echinococcus. Etiology: - echinococcosis Clinical manifestations: - majority of cases are asymptomatic - swelling without warmth or tenderness - symptoms related to infection of a cyst occur in ~25% of patients Laboratory: - serology: serum Echinococcus antibody Radiology: - magnetic resonance imaging (case report) with images [2] - cyst with daughter cysts [2] Complications: - rupture into the biliary tree, obstruction, fibrosis, & enterocutaneous fistula - rupture with leakage into the peritoneum & subsequent anaphylaxis Management: - see echinococcosis - cystectomy
