HIV-associated anemia
Etiology:
1) anemia of chronic disease
2) infectious agents
a) Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC)
b) lymphoma involving the bone marrow
c) granulomatous infections, especially fungal
d) parvovirus B19
3) drug-induced anemia
- zidovudine causes direct marrow toxicity
Laboratory:
1) serum erythropoietin levels < 50 U/mL (2/3)
2) also see anemia
Management:
1) recombinant erythropoietin for those patients with serum erythropoietin levels < 50 U/mL
2) intravenous immune globulin for parvovirus B19 infection
