Indications: - screening for hepatitis C infection Principle: Tests for antibodies to HCV antigens. 2nd generation testing (available in 1993) incorporates more antigens than 1st generation test. Insensitive for detection of acute HCV. False positives: 1) autoimmune hepatitis 2) disorders associated with hypergammaglobulinemia Use in combination with: 1) hepatitis C virus recombinant immunoblot assay (RIBA) 2) hepatitis C virus RNA by RT-PCR (viral load_ 3) bDNA assays
