Etiology: - hepatitis B exposure Clinical significance: 1) HBcAb total rises with HBcAb IgM, but remains elevated (regardless of whether or not the patient develops chronic hepatitis B) 2) HBcAb often remain elevated for life although titers of HBcAb may decline or disappear 3) isolated anti-HBc in the absence of HBsAb or HBsAg is common in HIV-infected patients [4]
