Indications: - evaluation of recent episode of hemoglobinuria - evaluation of renal involvement in hemochromatosis Reference interval: - < 0.1 mg/day Principle: - free hemoglobin is rapidly filtered by the renal glomeruli & reabsorbed in the proximal tubules where it is catabolized into ferritin & hemosiderin - hemosiderin will appear in the urine 2-3 days after an episode of acute hemolysis that resulted in hemoglobinuria - at this time hemoglobin in urine is often negative Increases: - renal involvement in hemochromatoisis - chronic hemolysis - prosthetic heart valves
