hemogen (hemopoietic gene protein, negative differentiation regulator protein, erythroid differentiation-associated gene protein, EDAG-1, HEMGN, EDAG, NDR, PRO1037, PRO1620)
Function:
- regulates proliferation & differentiation of hematopoietic cells
- overexpression blocks TPA-induced megakaryocytic differentiation in the K562 cells
- may prevent cell apoptosis through the activation of the nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-kB)
Compartment: nucleus
Expression:
- expressed in hematopoietic precursor cells (at protein level)
- detected in CD34+ & K562 leukemia cell line
- expressed in bone marrow, testis, thymus
- expressed in fetal liver, kidney & brain
- down-regulated during megakaryocytic differentiation of K562 cells by 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA) (at protein level)
- up-regulated in normal PBMCs by mitogens
Pathology:
- expressed in thymus & thyroid tumors, non-Hodgkins lymphoma, leukemia cell lines, peripheral blood mononuclear cells & bone marrow mononuclear cells (BMMCs) of patients with leukemia
