A schistocyte shaped like a military helmet. Etiology: - microangiopathic hemolytic anemia - thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) - hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) - disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) - intravascular prostheses - other traumatic hemolytic anemia - (see microangiopathic hemolytic anemia) Laboratory: - helmet cells in blood
