heliox (helium/oxygen)

A 70% helium, 30% oxygen mixture for ventilation. Administered by a non-rebreather face mask. Indications: 1) asthma, may be used with albuterol [2] 2) bronchiolitis Adverse effects: none reported Mechanism of action: - improves laminar airflow - may decrease work of breathing in patients with increased airway resistance
