heparin-binding EGF-like growth factor; heparin-binding protein; HB-EGF; HBEGF; diphtheria toxin receptor; DT-R (HBEGF, DTR, DTS, HEGFL)

Function: - may be involved in macrophage-mediated cellular proliferation - mitogenic for fibroblasts & smooth muscle but not endothelial cells - it is able to bind EGF receptors with higher affinity than EGF itself & is a far more potent mitogenfor smooth muscle cells than EGF - inducer of increased vascular permeability - acts as a diphtheria toxin receptor Structure: contains 1 EGF-like domain Compartment: - heparin-binding EGF-like growth factor: - secreted, extracellular space - mature HB-EGF is released into the extracellular space & probably binds to a receptor - proheparin-binding EGF-like growth factor: - cell membrane; single-pass type 1 membrane protein Laboratory: - heparin-binding protein in CSF is a marker for bacterial meningitis Expession: - released from activated neutrophils in severe sepsis
