symmetric stem cell division (GO:0098724)

Symmetric division of a stem cell to produce two stem cells of the same type as the parent. Symmetric stem cell division is necessary for amplification of stem cell populations in the absence of sources of stem cells external to an existing population. Notes: - Examples include the self-renewal of spermatogonial stem cells and (some) division during amplification of skeletal muscle satellite cell populations.
