Function: - cell surface proteoglycan that bears heparan sulfate - cell surface coreceptor for growth factors, extracellular matrix proteins, proteases & anti-proteases (putative) Structure: belongs to the glypican family Compartment: - cell membrane; lipid-anchor - GPI-anchor extracellular side (putative) - secreted, extracellular space (putative) Expression: - widely expressed - high expression in fetal kidney & lung - lower expressions in fetal liver & brain - in adult tissues - very abundant in ovary - high levels also observed in liver, kidney, small intestine & colon - not detected in peripheral blood leukocytes Pathology: - defects in GPC6 are a cause of omodysplasia type 1
