glucokinase, hexokinase-D or hexokinase-4
Function:
- participates in glucose transport into cells
- phosphorylation of glucose by glucokinase after internalization drives transport of glucose by making the resultant glucose-6-phosphate irreversibly trapped inside the cell
Expression:
- expressed only in liver & pancreatic islets
Pathology:
- mutations in the gene for glucokinase are involved in 60% of cases of mature onset diabetes of the young (MODY).
