Function: - participates in glucose transport into cells - phosphorylation of glucose by glucokinase after internalization drives transport of glucose by making the resultant glucose-6-phosphate irreversibly trapped inside the cell Expression: - expressed only in liver & pancreatic islets Pathology: - mutations in the gene for glucokinase are involved in 60% of cases of mature onset diabetes of the young (MODY).
