glucagon receptor; GL-R (GCGR)

Function: - receptor for glucagon - role in regulating blood glucose by controlling the rate of hepatic glucose production & insulin secretion - activity is mediated by G proteins which activate adenylyl cyclase & also a phosphatidylinositol-Ca+2 second messenger system - stimulates both cAMP & Ca+2 accumulation Structure: belongs to the G-protein coupled receptor 2 family Compartment: cell membrane; multi-pass membrane protein Pathology: - candidate for defects in diabetes mellitus type-2 (NIDDM) - Ser variant in position 40 is found in some type-2 diabetics, but also in non-diabetic subjects
