functional electrical stimulation (FES)
Bursts of electrical stimulation applied to the nerves or muscles affected by a stroke, with the goal of strengthening muscle contraction & improving motor control. Lower intensities (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, or TENS) are also used for pain control.
