fibroblast growth factor 3; FGF-3; heparin-binding growth factor 3; HBGF-3; proto-oncogene protein int-2 (FGF3, INT2)

Function: - role in the regulation of embryonic development, cell proliferation, & cell differentiation - required for normal ear development - interacts with FGFR1 & FGFR2 - affinity between fibroblast growth factors (FGFs) & their receptors is increased by heparan sulfate glycosaminoglycans that function as coreceptors Structure: - belongs to the heparin-binding growth factors family Compartment: secreted (putative) Pathology: - defects in FGF3 are a cause of deafness with labyrinthine aplasia, microtia & microdontia Genetics: - product of int-2 proto-oncogene [1] - FGF-3 is suggested to be a viral integration product [2]
