ferritin, mitochondrial
Function:
1) stores iron in a soluble, nontoxic, readily available form
2) role in iron homeostasis
3) has ferroxidase activity
- Fe+2 is taken up, oxidizetd to Fe+3 & deposited Fe(OH3)
4 Fe+2 + 4 H+ + O2 4 Fe+3 + 2 H2O
Structure:
- homo-oligomer of 24 subunits
- functional molecule is roughly spherical & contains a central cavity into which the polymeric mineral iron core is deposited
- belongs to the ferritin family.
- contains 1 ferritin-like diiron domain
Compartment: mitochondrion
Expression: expressed in testis >> brain, colon, heart, kidney, liver, lung, muscle, placental, spleen, small intestine
Pathology:
- expressed in erythroleukemia
