2] 2nd trimester: 0.8-1.2 mg/day (2.8-42 umol/day)
3] 3rd trimester: 5-50 mg/day (17-174 umol/day)
Clinical significance:
- estriol is the predominant urinary estrogen during pregnancy
- serial measurement reflects the integrity of the fetus-placenta complex
Increases:
- corticotropin (prenancy)
- spironolactone (males)
Decreases:
- ampicillin
- neomycin
- oral contraceptives
- probenecid
- thyroxine
Specimen:
1) urine, 24 hours
2) preserve with boric acid or thimerosal (25 mg/L)
3) refrigerate during & after collection
4) specify gestational age
