spherocyte

Spherocytes are small hyperchromic erythrocytes on peripheral smears, lacking central pallor. Mean corpuscular volume is not reduced. Etiology: 1) hereditary spherocytosis 2) extravascular hemolysis a) autoimmune warm hemolytic anemia b) glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency 3) splenectomy 4) Clostridium infections 5) hypophosphatemia
