endometritis

Etiology: - bacterial infection of the endometrium - infection generally polymicrobial involving aerobes & anaerobes - occurs more frequently after C-section than vaginal delivery Clinical manifestations: 1) lower abdominal cramps (uterine cramps) - muscle spasms, tenderness 2) vaginal discharge (foul smelling) 3) nausea/vomiting 4) fever 5) tachycardia 6) most presentations 1-7 days after delivery Laboratory: 1) complete blood count (CBC): leukocytosis 2) gram stain of vaginal discharge 3) culture of vaginal discharge Management: - intravenous clindamycin plus gentamicin
