endocrine myopathy

Etiology: Thyroid: 1) hyperthyroidism a) proximal, limb-girdle weakness b) bulbar paralysis c) ophthalmoplegia (sparing pupillary & ciliary muscles) d) thyrotoxic periodic paralysis in Orientals 2) hypothyroidism a) does not produce significant muscle weakness b) may cause muscle fatigue, aching & cramps c) serum creatine kinase is markedly elevated d) responds to thyroid hormone replacement with rapid & complete resolution of symptoms in most patients Adrenal 1) hypoadrenalism 2) hypercorticism Hyperparathyroidism 1) primary or secondary hyperparathyroidism 2) muscle weakness Acromegaly 1) muscle weakness 2) segmental muscle fiber necrosis Osteomalacia: 1) proximal muscle weakness 2) non-specific bone pain 3) fatigue
