Adverse effects:
HIV antiretroviral therapy is associated with:
1) hyperlipidemia
2) diabetes mellitus
3) hypertension
4) accelerated atherosclerosis
5) increased risk of myocardial infarction [1,2]
a) 26% per year during the 1st 4-6 years of treatment [1]
b) only antiretroviral protease inhibitors associated with increased risk [3]
The adverse effects are likely greatly outweighed by the lifesaving benefits of the antiretroviral actions.
