doxapram (Dopram)

Tradename: Dopram. Indications: - drug-induced or post-anesthesia respiratory depression - apnea Dosage: 1) initial dose: 0.5-1 mg/kg IV 2) repeat every 5min up to max of 2 mg/kg 3) IV infusion: a) 5 mg/min until response or adverse reaction b) decrease to 1-3 mg/min 4) max dose 300 mg Adverse effects: 1) ectopic heartbeats 2) hypotension 3) angina 4) vasoconstriction 5) tachycardia 6) headache 7) nausea/vomiting Mechanism of action: - stimulation of the respiratory centers in the medulla & carotid chemoreceptors
