Adverse effects: - acute effects [1] - acute dystonia - often involves neck, face, larynx or eye - rapidly reversed with IV diphendydramine - acute akathisia - late-appearing persistent effects (tardive syndromes) - tardive dyskinesia - tardive dystonia - often affects the face, neck, arms, trunk - tardive akathisia [1] - subacute or chronic - drug-induced parkinsonism - reversible with discontinuation of offending agent - withdrawal syndromes - dystonia resolves within a few months - neuroleptic malignant syndrome Notes: - dopmine D2 receptor antagonist
