DNA vaccine
Mechanism of action:
- DNA vaccines involve injecting DNA that encodes immunogenic antigens into tissue (usually muscle)
- cells take up the vaccine, begin to produce immunogenic protein, & humoral & cellular immune responses against the antigens follow
Advantages:
- can be produced relatively rapidly & inexpensively
- do not require refrigeration
- can induce vigorous humoral & cellular immune responses
Comparative biology:
- single dose of DNA vaccine against Zika virus provides protection in rhesus macaques [1]
