Banned insecticide. Metabolized to dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (DDE) Adverse effects: - higher serum levels of metabolite DDE associated with increased risk & increased severity of Alzheimer's disease [2] - HR=3 with highest tertile of serum levels of DDE [2] - probably carcinogenic to humans [3] - increased risk for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, testicular cancer, & liver cancers [3] - prenatal exposure linked to increased risk of autism in offspring [4]
