Function: - may have a role in neuroendocrine differentiation - precursor for fetal antigen 1 (same as pG2) Structure: - N- & O-glycosylated - monomer - contains 6 EGF-like domains Compartment: - membrane; single-pass type 1 membrane protein Alternative splicing: - named isoforms=2; long, short - additional isoforms seem to exist Expression: - found within the stromal cells in close contact to the vascular structure of placental villi, yolk sac, fetal liver, adrenal cortex & pancreas & in the beta cells of the islets of Langerhans in the adult pancreas Pathology: - expressed in neuroblastoma, pheochromocytoma & small cell lung carcinoma cell lines Genetics: - preadipocyte factor 1 (PREF1) is also derived from the same gene as DLK & is expressed abundantly in preadipocytes
