inflammation of the lacrimal gland Etiology: 1) acute dacryoadenitis a) bacterial infection - Staphylococcus - Neisseria gonorrhea b) viral infection - mumps - Epstein-Barr virus 2) chronic dacryoadenitis - sarcoidosis - Graves ophthalmopathy - orbital pseudotumor Pathology: - inflammatory enlargement of the lacrimal gland Clinical manifestations: - outer eyelid edema, erythema, tenderness - ocular pain - excess lacrimation - preauricular lymphadenopathy Radiology: - computed tomography may be indicated for diagnosis in difficult cases [1] Special laboratory: - biopsy if rule out tumor is indicated Complications: - visual impairment from edema Differential diagnosis: - malignancy of lacrimal gland Management: - rest & warm compressed for viral dacryoadenitis - other treatments specific to etiology
